Subject: Goal Safety   23 September, 2010.
THIS IS A MASS EMAIL FROM WEST VIRGINIA SOCCER ASSOCIATION.

Referee Assignors & All WVSA Clubs Please Take A Moment To Read And Always Follow these tips on Goal Safety

It is the beginning of a new Seasonal year for soccer in WVSA. One of the most important items of concern for the safety of our players has to be Goal safety. Each Club MUST inspect that their goals are all secure and safe for play at the beginning of each season.

This can only be considered an initial effort.

Because of field realignment or simple field maintenance, goals are moved from time to time and must be secured again before play resumes on the field. The only sure way to be sure the goals are secure on any field is to constantly check them before our teams take the field for competition or practice. With that in mind, I'm requesting that prior to allowing our teams to take the field of play, that someone on each team be designated to physically check the security of all goals.

In addition to the team check, the referee crew has a responsibility to check goal security as well as other items concerning field safety before play begins for any match.

With this dual check in place, it is important that any goal found unsecured be reported to the club and league for the competition or practice. Only if we all do our part can we insure a safe environment for our players. Please take a moment and view the attached T.V. spot on goal safety. It serves as an example of what could happen if we drop our guard.

Referee's,                                                                                                                                                                 05/18/2010

I want to first thank you very much for all you are doing for us this season. I have gotten many compliments this year and that is a welcome site especially with the multitude of new referees we have this season. If anyone has a problem I want you to feel free to talk to me. I have watched many games this season and you are all doing a wonderful job.

Now on the other side, if you want to get paid you have to start distinguishing your referee cards so we know whose they are. I picked up the cards from Cheat Lake yesterday and there were several that still didn't have your name circled. We have a volunteer processing your cards, matching them up with the schedule and putting together who is supposed to be paid what. I would like very much to keep her around so you have to circle your name so we know whose card it is.

Please check the goals. I am pretty sure that nobody checked the goals on the U12 field this weekend because the goal was about six inches to a foot off of the end line. It was also that way Saturday morning when I was putting the flags out. It is your responsibility to make sure that the goals are in the correct place and anchored down. Along with this make sure you are on the correct field. We have been rotating the U8's around all of the fields at Cheat Lake and Laurel Point. Very seldom will you have back to back games on a U8 field so please pay attention to the field assignments. There is a reason we are rotating the games around.

Lastly, I want to address the rough play that seems to be going on more and more. While I don't necessarily think you have to blow a whistle on every push or trip but you need to at least yell out for them to watch the rough play. If you don't address it early then it will escalate later in the game. This then leads to parents and coaching starting to yell from the sidelines. YOU MUST take control early. As far as I am concerned I always ask to air on the side of caution first.

As Linda has stated multiple times Tammy Lemley is now taking over as the Referee Assignor so make sure you address her with any of your questions on the schedule. Also remember I am always available for you to talk to and if you would like to talk to me on the phone just ask and I will get you my number.

Some of you had asked about the pay scale.  This is the NEW pay scale for referees for this season!  Note that Centers and ARs get the same pay for all the games.  The main change this year from before is the new way we pay if there is only 1 or 2 referees on a game that requires 3 referees (U10 and up).  There is NO additional pay for the AR if there are only 2 on a game.  The logic is you aren't doing anything extra, but the center ref is having to do a lot more since the club linesman can only call out of bounds that center has to basically cover all the off sides on that end of the field too as well as other fouls.
